Your Child’s First Visit
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you take your child to visit the dentist for the
first time the approximate age of 12 months. If you have concerns or questions any age is appropriate.
The first dental visit is usually short and involves little or no treatment. This visit gives your child
an opportunity to meet the dentist and his staff in an enjoyable, fun and friendly way. Ideally,
try to make it a positive experience by having a positive attitude.
Parents should prepare their child before the first dental visit regarding the new places and
new friendly people at the dental office. Present it as a new place for exploration and do not
use phrases like "don't be afraid" or “promise” the child any special treats.
Special prior arrangements can be made with the
receptionist at the time of the appointment if you feel
there is a need to be present with your child during their
dental visit.
If your child is too frightened or uncomfortable and
uncooperative, it is better to spend the first dental visit
on having the child become familiar with the dental staff and the office ahead of dental
treatment.
